Communication is key for success. This phrase can be applied to all aspects of life and more specifically business. When it comes to photographing families or couples communication is very important. It allows for more genuine photos, engaging portraits, and a successful photo shoot.
When taking photos of others it can become very awkward very quickly. This is why it is important to effectively communicate with your subjects as much as possible before and during the photo shoot. No one would feel comfortable with a stranger snapping pictures of them without saying a word. I like to know my clients before I even press the shutter button. This allows me as a professional to know what to expect on the day of the shoot and it allows my clients to get to know me. Having a pre-shoot meet to “break the ice” helps both parties feel more comfortable with each other. This is a time for the photographer to get to know the client and get a feel for what they are looking to get out of the shoot. It also allows the client to feel out the photographer and see if working together would be a good fit.
The pre-shoot meeting also serves other purposes besides first impressions. It allows for the photographer to explain how the shoot will work, what to bring/wear, and answer all questions the client(s) may have. This pre-shoot meeting sets both parties up for success and minimalizes any problems or hurdles that they may encounter.
